A Word of Truth #156
Joseph was betrothed to Mary but they had not begun living together as husband and wife. Therefore, it came as a great shock of sadness when Joseph learned that Mary was pregnant. Undoubtedly, Joseph’s heart welled-over in hurting surprise and deep sorrow as he contemplated how his beloved bride could have been so unfaithful. Joseph would have had every right to make a public example of Mary and expose what appeared to be adultery. Yet, Joseph’s love for her remained so great that he was going to simply dissolve their marriage privately.
One night as Joseph’s mind and heart were filled with these matters, God sent an angel. The angel informed Joseph that Mary had not been unfaithful, but was bearing the Son of God. At the Word of God, Joseph’ sadness disappeared. The angel told Joseph that he should not be afraid to take Mary as his wife. Joseph faithfully followed the Word of God.
The Word of God stilled Joseph’s fears and gave direction for his future. It will do the same for you.
A Word of Truth #157
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). God’s love for all human beings moved Him to send His Son, Jesus, to be this world’s Savior. Jesus’ love for all human beings moved Him to redeem everyone in this world by living a perfect life in their place and by dying on the cross to pay the penalty for their sins. Because of God’s love and Jesus’ love the whole world has been redeemed.
But how do the benefits of Jesus’ redemptive work become ours personally? They become ours when we are led to believe in Jesus, that is, when we place our trust in Him as our Savior. We cannot save ourselves, no matter how much we try. Rather—forgiveness, life, and salvation are all ours as a gift from God when we believe in Jesus. {PDN}
