“A Word of Truth” from Immanuel Lutheran Church of Mankato…

It was Necessary for Jesus to be both True God and True Man

A Word of Truth #136

Any Savior from sin, had to be more than a man. One sinful man who cannot save himself certainly can do nothing to help another sinful man out of his sins. Furthermore, a Savior needed to save not just one man, but the whole world of sinners. Only God could make a full atoning sacrifice for the sins of all people. The psalmist writes, “None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him—for the redemption of their souls is costly…” (Psalm 49:7).

A Savior needed to fulfill God’s expectations under the law. God cannot be placed under the Law. So, the Son of God became man and was placed under the law to fulfill it for us. Furthermore, the punishment for sin is death and in order to make full payment for sins, a Savior had to die. God cannot die. Again, the Savior had to be man.

Only a Savior who is uniquely God and Man can save us from our sins. Jesus Christ is that unique Savior.

Jesus was and remains the Prophet sent by God

A Word of Truth #137

In the Old Testament, God sent prophets to speak to His people. The prophets were mouthpieces for God, receiving the words and then speaking them to the people.

God anointed Jesus Christ to be our prophet. While on the earth, Jesus served as a prophet by preaching and teaching the Word of God. He went from town to town and place to place instructing sinners to see their sin, and then telling them about the forgiveness He had come to accomplish.

Jesus has ascended into heaven and is no longer visibly walking the earth. Yet, He is still active as the prophet of God. Now, Jesus speaks to us through His word in the Bible and He sends His believers out to “Preach the Gospel to every creature.” (Mark 16:15).

As we carry the word of God to others and use it among our selves, Jesus Himself is active in that Word and remains our Prophet.
