B. All Praise to God Eternally!

I. In the News

II. The "Judging" Question

  1. Matthew 7:1-5 ~ context shows the kind of "judging" Jesus forbids

  2. 1 Corinthians 6:1ff ~ QUESTION: We shall judge angels? (v.3)

"JUDGE" = to select, prefer, distinguish, put in order, reach a decision; only in context does it become "negative"

CONTEXT: See 1 Corinthians 5:9-13. Compare with Matthew 7. In Matthew Jesus said "do not judge" in 1 Corinthians 5, Paul tells the Corinthians to judge. Note the difference

"keep company with" = literally: "to mix it up with"

    SAINTS JUDGE/RULE WITH CHRIST ~ Daniel 7:22; Matthew 19:28; 2 Timothy 2:12; Jude 14-15; Revelation 20:4

(we already "rule" with Christ as God’s children, and will in glory on the Last Day)

SAINTS JUDGE ANGELS ~ An angel’s stature as a messenger of God doesn’t diminish our ability to discern/judge

    See Galatians 1:8
    See 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6

APPLY SAINTS "JUDGING" TO CONTEXT IN PAUL’S LETTER

III. A Study of: Limbo, Purgatory, Hell, and Heaven

  1. LIMBO

    What does "limbo" mean?

Limbo of the Fathers and Infant Limbo

  2. PURGATORY

    What is "purgatory"?

Passages used to "support" Purgatory…do they?

    2 Timothy 1:18, Matthew 5:26, Matthew 12:32, 1 Corinthians 3:13

From a human standpoint, what is the advantage of Purgatory?

Martin Chemnitz (a leader in the early Lutheran Church) described the basis for Purgatory in three points:

    1. Only the guilt of mortal sin is remitted on account of Christ (and only if contrition is sufficient). The eternal punishments due mortal sins are by the power of the keys changed into temporal ones, which everyone must pay, either himself or through another, by the owed satisfaction, either in this life or in the future life.

What does the Bible say? John 19:30; Romans 4:25; Romans 8:1; Galatians 3:13; Colossians 2:13; 1 John 1:7

    2. For small or venial sins, we ourselves both can and should make satisfaction, either in this or in the future life.

What does the Bible say? Ephesians 2:1-10

    3. The blots of the uncleanness of sin clinging to our nature are to be cleansed entirely through satisfactions. If this is not done fully and perfectly in this life, atonement by fire is necessary.

What does the Bible Say? Mark 16:16; Luke 23:42-43; John 3:16; 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

  3. HELL

When Christ returns, all people will be raised and all people will be judged.

Believers and unbelievers will receive their "reward".

    Describe your picture of hell.

How does the Bible describe hell?

    For whom was hell prepared?

Who will be sent to hell?

  4. HEAVEN

How does the Bible describe eternal life—heaven?

    Matthew 25:10; Revelation 19:9
    Matthew 8:11; Luke 13:29
    Luke 22:30
    2 Timothy 4:18; Revelation 7:16-17; 21:4
    1 Peter 1:8; Psalm 16:11; John 16:22, 17:24
    1 Corinthians 15:42f; Philippians 3:21; Matthew 13:43
    Matthew 13:30
    Matthew 22:30

TRUE HELL: Matthew 25:12

TRUE HEAVEN: Revelation 21:3d
