BIBLE HISTORY (an excerpt from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount):
Matthew 6:24-34; 10:29-31 [Parallel account: Luke 12:27-31]
"Overheard in an Orchard"
(poet unknown)
| Said the robin to the sparrow, | Said the sparrow to the robin, | |
| I should really like to know Friend, | I think that it must be | |
| Why those anxious human beings | That they have no heavenly Father | |
| Rush about and worry so. | Such as cares for you and me." |
v. 24
a bit of common sense leading into Jesus’ following conclusion
v. 25
Literally: "stop worrying about your life"
Those who serve mammon will naturally worry
YES OF COURSE! There is more to life….more to the body
v. 26
Jesus defeats any excuses for worries about food
See Matthew 10:29-31; 4th petition of the Lord’s Prayer
v. 27-30
Jesus defeats any excuses about worrying about our clothing
Worry shows a weakness in faith (cf: disciples in storm)
Solomon vs. a Mt. Rainier springtime meadow
v. 31-34
Literally: "Don’t BEGIN to worry…"
See Romans 8:31-32
Worrying about these things is something the unbelievers do
Is not God ABLE to provide?
DON’T WORRY. . .about these things or anything else!
BE HAPPY. . .that God takes care of it all!

v. 26 ~ Leviathan: Isaiah 27:1, Psalm 74:14, Psalm 104:26, Job 3:8, Job 41:1ff ~ A powerful, fearful sea creature but one that yields to God. It is a creature God put in the sea to "play there."
vv.27-30 ~ A lesson learned from the animals (cf: Jesus’ words re: the birds in Matthew)
vv. 33-35 ~ A conclusion
PSALM 114 ~ Our Preserver DELIVERS!
God’s faithful deliverance of Israel is the same faithfulness He promises to those who are His people through faith.
The earth serves the Lord! He orders it so that it serves us!
